Last Saturday, the Marigot seafront was transformed into a training ground for volunteers from the Red Cross of Saint Martin. As part of National Resilience Day, around fifteen volunteers took part in a full-scale exercise mixing earthquake and tsunami simulation, with the aim of testing their responsiveness and coordination in a crisis situation.
Two tents had been set up: one dedicated to first aid, the other serving as reception center for those involved (FALLS)“Setting up the device, the tents, all of that is part of the exercise,” explains Helene Raux, volunteer. “We review first aid procedures together, then we prepare the CAI boxes: food, drinks, documentation. Each person welcomed must be listened to, guided and supported according to their condition.”
Today's scenario put the rescuers face to face with several "victims" : a disoriented person who had left the aid station, another in shock, etc. Each volunteer had to play their role to the letter, while their colleagues ensured care, triage and, if necessary, referral to the hospital. “These scenarios allow us to strengthen our efficiency, to review good reflexes and to communicate better between us,” emphasizes Hélène Raux.
For William Raux, deputy president and emergency and first aid representative at the Red Cross, these exercises must also have a educational dimension : “It’s important to do this internally, but also in public, so that residents understand our missions and know how to react. The Red Cross operates through volunteer work, “these moments in the field remind us how much collective preparation is essential in the face of crises. "
On the sidelines of the simulations, several passers-by stopped to observe or ask questions to the volunteers, curious to better understand life-saving actionsA morning of learning, both technical and human, in the service of resilience. _Vx
