SOCIETY: A first successful battle against breast cancer | FAXINFO

Last Friday, young people and people from all walks of life gathered at the Mission Locale in Marigot to prepare a one-hour parade in keeping with the theme of Pink October against breast cancer.

Named " One step for life, united against breast cancer”, This event, punctuated by Afro-Caribbean percussion from the partner association Swali-Ka, aimed primarily to raise awareness about this cancer, which is becoming increasingly common worldwide. In 2023, there were 61000 new cases in France.

A scourge that is arousing collective commitment at both national and local levels, and an initiative highlighted in Saint-Martin by Lidzie Eucharis, coordinator of the event. Tumbled for life : " We need to raise awareness among young people about breast cancer, because they don't necessarily understand its significance."

After a month of October dedicated to educating these young people through awareness workshops (self-examination techniques, knowing how to detect the first signs, key figures), the launch represents the culmination of this project led by the Mission Locale team.

After an afternoon spent preparing for the event, the procession, made up of around fifty people, gathered in front of the stadium on Rue de Hollande at 19 p.m. and marched to the ferry terminal on foot, escorted by the police. After a 20-minute break to the frenetic rhythm of drums and conch shells, the parade took the opposite route to return to the starting point at 20 p.m.

"This is a first edition intended to continue in the future and which we hope to develop and improve over time." adds Lidzie Eucharis, pleased with the intergenerational enthusiasm of the event. _LA
