Since the start of the school year, several videos showing fights between students have been circulating on social media.
There’s nothing quite like a worrying situation, according to the Sint Maarten police force (KPSM), which alerts on the risks faced by young people and the mobilization of already limited police resources.
Each incident distracts law enforcement from other urgent missions and endangers not only the students involved, but also those nearby. The KPSM emphasizes the key role of families: “The behavior of minors is not only a school matter; it also involves the responsibility of parents and the community.”
The police are calling parents and guardians to talk with their children about respect, conflict management and behavioral choices. Authorities also warn against the broadcasting of videos of these clashes : filming and sharing such content contributes to aggravating the phenomenon and can have legal consequences.
To prevent further incidents, KPSM community and school resource officers will work in close collaboration with schools, parents and students. The goal: to create a safer climate, conducive to learning and young people's development. The presence of law enforcement will be increased around schools, while calling for collective mobilization.
