Yesterday, the 550 students of Soualiga Middle School returned to their new school in La Savane. The children, arriving a little before 7 a.m., were welcomed by all the staff and the vice-rector, Harry Christophe. After a speech by the principal, Benjamin MOra, the youngest student at the school, and the most senior teacher, who was present at the school’s inauguration in Cul-de-Sac in 1998, symbolically cut the inaugural ribbon. To prepare for the start of the school year, the students received a map of the building and their new schedules before the holidays. We met with the teaching staff and some students to get their impressions of the new building.
Benjamin Mora, principal of the college:
“Personally, I’ve been waiting for this for almost a year, but for the teachers who experienced Irma, it’s been nine years. We’re very happy with the result; it’s a beautiful school. I think the students are going to be happy. Some have already seen it, since some students came to prepare a show last Thursday and Friday, and they spent ten minutes admiring the courtyard and the building before going to their classroom.”
Michel, a student:
“I’m pretty excited, I think the school is beautiful, frankly, I’m happy. The old school had its good and bad points. What I like best about this one is how they’ve used plants for decoration. I can’t wait to see the classrooms and have air conditioning!”
Marine, mathematics teacher:
“We are all delighted, especially since everyone has been waiting for this for a while. It’s fantastic, both for the staff and the students. We visited the school before the start of term so we could get settled in and properly welcome the students. Now, we’re discovering it with the children inside, so it makes it even more meaningful. We’ll discuss the new school, review the rules, and then get back to our lessons.”
Sapphire, student:
“It’s really good, the school is beautiful, it’s better. I was waiting a bit to see what it would look like. The teachers talked a lot about what the middle school would be like, with new equipment and bigger classrooms, so we’ll see.”
