PHILIPSBURG – Our 2017 “Person” of the Year are all of St. Maarten’s Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO) that contributed to the recovery in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma.
From St. Maarten Hospitality and Trade Association (SHTA) securing the 1st non-military relief supplies to St. Maarten to the Red Cross’s continued efforts with providing all primary school children on St. Maarten with a meal on a daily basis. Or K1 Brittania’s relief efforts with providing effected residents with water and warm meals. Or the White and Yellow Cross miraculous efforts to continue to care for their clients while there buildings were severely damaged. Or Nature Foundation’s continued efforts to clean up St. Maarten’s beaches. Or EPIC’s heroic task of planting hundreds of mangrove seedlings in the Simpson Bay Lagoon.
In the absence of a Government effort, all persons working for these NGO’s (and others we may have forgot to mention), stepped up to the plate and delivered relief and showed what true St. Maarten resilience is all about. Something that is substantially lacking in our Parliament and Government.
From all of us here at SXM Talks: you are St. Maarten’s heroes and we salute you in your ongoing efforts to make a real difference and make St. Maarten a better place!
