SINT MAARTEN (PHILIPSBURG) – The Beyond Kultura Events Foundation (BKE) will embark within weeks on its STORY-READING- Program, thanks to the commitment and financial support from the Prince Bernhard Cultural Fund Caribbean, the Collaborative Funds Caribbean and the Nederlandse Taal Unie, a Dutch Literacy Funding Agency.
President of the BKE, Loekie Morales is very happy with the enormous support of these Funding agencies. They all consider this READING program a valuable, educational program for children on Sint Maarten.
Morales: ‘The training to read properly for children, and get them to love reading, is mainly for former teachers and students to become teachers, or adults who are versed in reading for children.
Some years ago, Beyond Kultura has developed this Reading program with in first instance as beneficiaries, children from 3 to 13 years old, to mainly give them fun in reading and listening to stories. Schools have gotten an invitation to subscribe to this READING program before September 1.
Listening and Reading well are fundamental skills for understanding the content.
Story reading workshop
The Story READING training will be captured in at least a 10 hours’ workshop. Participants will get a weekend training, 27-28 and 29 September, in the fundamentals of ‘Listening and Reading skills’. Besides important technical tricks, much attention will be paid to the pleasure that reading provides and the value of various areas of development and education of the child.
Aidan Chambers’ reading circle will be used for explaining the reading process.
Participants will be introduced to the techniques of reading. Attention will be also given to the usage of voice, story outline, body language, sense of your audience. The book functions are also covered.
After the training, they will have to read stories in 8 reading sessions to children of max 45 minutes at Community Centers or Afternoon School Programs, schools and Children homes.
At the end of the program, they will get a certificate ‘Introduction Reading’ for the part they have fulfilled. Ten to a maximum of 15 adults are able to participate in this program.
The training is end of September, but as of 6th of October to 7th of December, they will be reading stories for children. During this period, they will be coached and evaluated by an assigned coacher.
The recruiting of the story READERS starts now, until 20th of September.
The training/workshops for story readers will be mainly in English, but children will get the Readings in English and Dutch.
BKE is recruiting primary schools, the USM, NIPA, the Afternoon school programs and Community Centers to participate in this program.
