SINT MAARTEN (SIMPSON BAY) – The 2019 edition of the SXM Duo Xtreme MTB race, organized by TriSport and sponsored by Baker Tilly and Winair, was won by Mark Maidwell and Otis Paines.
Winair sponsored two return tickets to Curacao for Maidwell and Paines to compete in the Curacao edition of the MTB Xtreme Duo held November 17, 2019.
Last year’s winners Dick Luttekes and Karl Spijker came in second and will also compete in the in-Curacao edition of the MTB Extreme Duo.
The Duo Xtreme mountain bike race is the race of races when it comes to mountain biking in the region. The race was first organized in Sint-Maarten in 2012 where a lot of riders from Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao competed.
This year a Bonaire Duo competed in the SXM race and came in fourth place, just missing the podium.
The ABC islands all have their own Xtreme MTB race. Since the Curacao Xtreme is more about distance, strong wind and less about technical trails and hills, Sint-Maarten riders are up for a different cup of tea.
However, the SXM Duo Xtreme, is considered the toughest of all islands. Although roughly half the distance of the ABC Xtremes, the course is intensive due to hills such as Pic Paradis, Princess in Bellevue and Anse Marcel.
The SXM Duo Xtreme started and finished at Kimsha Beach. Pictures of the race by Annee Blaum can be found on Facebook (SXM Extreme MTB).
