MINISTER IRION VISITS DR. MLK JR SCHOOL TO ASSESS DAMAGE | SOUALIGA NEWSDAY

SINT MAARTEN (PHILIPSBURG) – Minister of Education, Youth, Culture and Sport, Ardwell Irion paid a personal visit to the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. school today to assess the state of the roof. Upon his arrival, the minister found tattered tarpaulin, a leaking roof and the school’s staff mopping rainwater off the floor.

The minister Irion was in disbelief to discover that the roofs had not been touched since they were covered with tarpaulin more than two years ago. “It is unacceptable that this hasn’t been resolved yet. Our children deserve better.” The minister was accompanied by the minister of VROMI, Chris Wever. “It was brought to our attention and we are here for technical support, this will be resolved.” Minister Wever said.

Minister Irion spoke to staff at the school to understand the extent of the damage and what effect it was having on the quality of education the students were having. The minister assured the staff present that he would hold a meeting today with Kurt Ruan, who has been in charge of getting the roof fixed. He also stated that replacing the tarpaulin as a temporary solution would happen within a week so the kids would no longer be affected by heavy rain.

Kurt Ruan, assured the minister that it is top priority for him and agreed to weekly updates with Minister Irion.
