New children’s book about Irma on its way by Children’s Author Morales | SOUALIGA NEWSDAY

PHILIPSBURG – A new children’s book by author Loekie Morales is on its way. This time it is a story about Hurricane Irma featuring two boys from Sint Maarten. Their experiences and perspectives on the hurricane are portrayed for children aged eight years and up.

“The process of creating a story, writing it down and then publishing it is always quite an endeavor,’ Loekie Morales states. ‘But it’s the process that I am used to – I have published eleven books in the past nineteen years. In this next book I’ve relived Irma for myself, but also for Caribbean children. Right after the passing of hurricane Irma, the story was born.

“The story has wandered around in my mind for months. At a certain point you just have to find the peace to actually let the story flow from your head to the pen and from the pen to the paper. It took some time to let it sink in, in such a way that I could see the main characters running around, doing their business, thinking and talking to each other.

“When you experience it yourself, it flows a little better, but you must always include research as part of your writing process. We have almost reached the final part now,” Morales said in her Thursday media statement.

The story is in Dutch, the language Morales prefers for writing. Barbara van der Woude is currently working on the English translation. Riet Sint is proofreading the Dutch as well as the English version. The illustrator is also busy putting the dots together.

“It will take some weeks to edit the story and add the illustrations to get the final product. But when proofreader, translator and writers meet in the right ambiance, you can count on a captivating local story; a book for children and adults to enjoy. We’ll keep you posted,” Morales concludes.
