SINT MAARTEN (GREAT BAY) - Freegan Food Foundation is opening registration for a new cycle of the Freegan Food Market, the foundation said on Saturday, August 22, 2026, in a press statement.

“Our program that helps families and individuals in St. Maarten who are struggling to make ends meet.

“The Freegan Food Market works like a real grocery store, not a food bank. Once a household is accepted into the program, they come in every week and pick out their own groceries, fresh produce and household essentials, based on what their family actually needs, for a small personal contribution of 4 dollars per person per week that helps keep the market running. Nobody hands you a pre-packed box here. You choose what feeds your family, and that matters to us.

“For that 4 dollar per person weekly contribution, participants receive 12.50 dollars worth of groceries in return. The Freegan Food Market is designed to offer meaningful relief for households that are struggling, and it is meant to supplement a family's food budget, not to replace a full week of grocery shopping.

“Because space in this cycle is limited to about 300 people, roughly 125 families, registering is the first step, not a guarantee of a spot. Here is how it works: you register for an intake first.

“During the intake, one of our team members sits down with you to understand your household's situation. Once all the intakes are done, every single person who registered will receive a personal message letting them know if they have been accepted into the program. So, if you do not hear from us right away, please do not worry, everyone who registers will get an answer.

“None of this would be possible without the people and organizations who stand behind us. A heartfelt thank you to St. Maarten Development Fund, the Ministry of VSA, Republic Bank, and all our private donors and sponsors for making this program happen, cycle after cycle.” - Freegan Food Foundation

How to register for an intake

Intakes for this new cycle will take place on September 7, 8 and 12. Registration closes on September 4, so if you or someone you know could use some help, please do not wait until the last moment.

To register, send a WhatsApp message at +1 721 587 6737. WhatsApp only, the foundation is not able to take phone calls. You are also welcome to walk into Freegan HQ at Walter A. Nisbeth Rd 89 during our opening hours, and one of our team members will help you register in person.

What to bring to your intake

To help us get a clear picture of your household during the intake, please bring the following along:

*A recent GEBE bill, as proof of address.

*Your rental agreement or other proof of housing.

*Proof of income, such as a recent pay slip or benefits statement.

If you are accepted, the new cycle of the Freegan Food Market officially starts on October 1.
