Rombley stress International Observers is about St. Maarten, not about the Dutch | SOUALIGA NEWSDAY

SINT MAARTEN (PHILIPSBURG) – ‘International observer for our parliamentary election (2020) is not something the Dutch should instruct for St. Maarten, it is something St. Maarten should want for St. Maarten. This is the opinion of People’s Progressive Alliance (PPA), candidate #3, Carmelita Rombley, on the current debate on St. Maarten’s position to have International Observer at the 2020 parliamentary election, a PPA press statement said on Tuesday.

According to Rombley, “it is essential to understand that International Observers are a necessary part of elections, and not out of the ordinary, all over the world.”

She said: “The observation can become a benefit in pointing out any irregularities according to national ordinances in the election. Also, as an independent body, it can help legitimize the election to the international community. This is extremely important to St. Maarten, with regards to its future development cooperation opportunities via the kingdom or otherwise. “

“Furthermore, their presence can ensure the creditability of the result to the broader St. Maarten community. This is especially vital because St. Maarten has had instances where there has been corruption amongst many known politicians and the mistrust of our leaders at present.”

“Furthermore, St. Maarten may have the opportunity to develop independent national observers. If international observations can work alongside domestic observers, the example set by international observers can help St. Maarten develop national observation efforts.”

Rombley, The PPA #3 candidate concluded, “If financing is the problem, this is a priority for the reasons stated above. We must work with our kingdom parties to establish a way forward.”
