SINT MAARTEN (PHILIPSBURG) – During September, Rotarians around the world focused their activities on the promotion of basic education and literacy. Rotary Club of Saint Martin Sunrise Club engaged in several activities related to this theme that we wish to highlight.
Our club visited the students of the MAC School at the Browlia F. Maillard Campus and the St. Joseph Primary School. There we read different books and excerpts to enthusiastic youngsters. Our goal was to set the example that reading is not only essential but also a fun activity for them to engage in. Additionally, we had bookmarkers made bearing the Rotary logo and the 4-way test. Members distributed the bookmarkers at the St. Joseph Primary School and St. Dominic High School.
Reading is not only for children. Adults benefit from reading as well, so our club decided to spend a morning reading to senior citizens residing in the Sint Maarten’s Home. The seniors related so well to the stories they heard that started to tell stories of their own lives. This activity was a huge success that the club intends to repeat in the future.
Basic Education and Literacy month is the ideal time to put our educator in a positive light. We took this opportunity to award the educators in our club, Ms. Marcellia Henry, Ms. Daniella Arrindell, and Ms. Claudia Connor, with certificates of appreciation for their contributions to education and literacy.
At first glance, the connection between peace and education may not be recognized. However, the link is significant. Education can lead to peace, and peace is imperative to a good education. Therefore, we commemorated International Peace Day on September 21st, together with students from the St. Joseph Primary School and the Clay Montessori School in Madame Estate. One of the club’s past presidents addressed the students emphasizing the importance of peace and forming a human peace sign with the students.
The Rotary Club of Saint Martin Sunrise is dedicated to making our society a better place. We hope that our example of being of service to others inspires more people to do the same.
