SINT MAARTEN/ST. EUSTATIUS – The ‘Samenwerkende Fondsen Cariben or SFC’ (Cooperating Foundations for the Dutch Caribbean) office on Sint Maarten, which caters to the islands of Sint Maarten, Saba and Statia with providing funding opportunities for social endeavours, hosted two successful interactive workshops on Statia last week, SFC announced on Thursday.
SFC was set up about 15 years ago, as a collaborative effort to support social initiatives on the Dutch Caribbean islands, regardless of their status within the Kingdom. It is an organization that is facilitated by five funding agencies originating from the Netherlands; Fonds Sluyterman van Loo, Kansfonds, Oranje Fonds, Roomsch Catholijk Oude Armen Kantoor (RCOAK), and Stichting Kinderpostzegels.
The workshops, a morning and evening session, were hosted to assist Statian NGOs with applying for funds through SFC. A background on the initiative was given, the procedures, as well as an explanation as to what types of initiatives/projects qualify and how funds can be requested.
There is an annual budget of approximately two million euro’s available for social initiatives from the Dutch Caribbean, and due to the fact that not many Statian NGOs apply, the initiative was taken, through assistance of the Island Government to host these workshops. There was a lot of interest, about 35 persons participated, most representing different organizations.
The Project Coordinator for SFC, Fleur Hermanides, was very happy with the outcome and would therefore like to thank CNSI for allowing us to host the workshops on their premises, as well as many thanks going to Dirkje de Jong from the Island Government of Statia for helping set up the workshops, and playing in on the needs of the local NGOs.
