SINT MAARTEN (SUCKER GARDEN) – In January 2020, the Club held its first “Teach Me to Fish Project” whereby the club supplied 20 families with a shopping bag filled with food and a cookbook with easy low-cost recipes. The purpose was to provide unemployed/underemployed residents with the means and to provide for themselves and teach them how to prepare cheap healthy meals.
The Covid-19 Pandemic caused serious issues with so many persons losing their jobs. The Gov’t attempted to assist these persons but after seeing the items that were given it was clear that more should be done for in particular people with Diabetes since almost everything given could/should not be consumed by persons with Diabetes.
Working with Doctors and Senior Citizen Organizations the Sint Maarten Lions Club was able to provide 48 families with a grocery bag filled with approx. 2 weeks (depending on the number of persons in the household) of fresh produce and a gift certificate to purchase additional items. The club also provided a booklet with important information on living with Diabetes, which also included recipes.
The recipients were all very happy with the donated groceries and thanked the Sint Maarten Lions Club for remembering them. The club would like to that Cost U Less for sponsoring the bags. These projects are made possible through the fundraising events hosted by the Sint Maarten Lions Club such as our Lions Christmas Bingo and Car Raffle.
