SINT MAARTEN (POND ISLAND) - The University of St. Martin (USM) welcomed its newest students to campus on Friday, August 14, during the Fall 2026 New Student Orientation, marking the beginning of a new academic journey for students entering the University.
The orientation gave new students an opportunity to become familiar with USM, meet faculty and staff, learn more about the services and resources available to them, and better understand what to expect as they begin their studies.
Students also received words of motivation and encouragement from USM alumnus Jerome Gumbs, who delivered a motivational address to the incoming group. Drawing from his own journey, Gumbs encouraged students as they prepare to take this next step in their education and reminded them of the opportunities that can come from remaining committed to their goals. Minister of Finance Marinka Gumbs also addressed the incoming students, offering encouraging words as they begin the new academic year and reminding them of the importance of education and making the most of the opportunity before them.
With classes officially kicking off today, Monday, August 17, the team at USM is also pleased to welcome back our returning students as the University begins another academic semester. The Fall 2026 semester runs from August 17 through December 5, 2026, bringing students back to the classroom across USM's degree programs, individual course offerings and Continuing Education Program (CEP).
For new students, Friday's orientation was not simply about receiving information. It was an opportunity to begin building connections and becoming part of the wider USM community. Students were encouraged to take an active role in their university experience, get to know their lecturers and classmates, make use of the support available to them, and become involved in student activities throughout the semester.
USM also reminds the wider community that learning at the University is not limited to students pursuing a full degree. Individuals interested in strengthening a particular skill, exploring a new area of study, or continuing their personal and professional development can inquire about individual courses and Continuing Education opportunities available through the University.
Whether a student is beginning a degree, returning to complete one, taking an individual course, or looking for an opportunity to continue learning, USM remains committed to creating accessible pathways to education for the people of St. Maarten and the wider region. As the new semester begins, the team at USM encourages students to approach the months ahead with purpose, remain engaged, and make full use of the opportunities available both inside and outside of the classroom.
The University extends a warm welcome to all new and returning students and wishes them a successful Fall 2026 semester. Welcome to USM, and welcome back. Here's to a semester of learning, growth, new connections, and continuing to soar higher.
