PHILIPSBURG:— The objects of Rotary are to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service. High ethical standards in business and profession; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarians’ occupation as an opportunity to serve society. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarians’ business and community life. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a worldwide fellowship of business and professional persons in the ideal of service.
In keeping with the objectives of Rotary, the Rotary Club of St. Maarten-Mid Isle have awarded a vocational award to Sabrina Vrutaal. Sabrina was nominated by Rotarian Femke. A Vocational Service award is presented annually to someone in the community who has exemplified outstanding professional achievement while maintaining very high ethical standards.
Sabrina is a true all-rounder. After completing her nursing studies in the Netherlands, Sabrina returned to the island in 2007 and started working as a registered nurse at SMMC. After becoming a mom, herself, she transferred to the baby clinic. Sabrina furthered her professional career at SZV from 2011, as the AVBZ nurse in charge of the chronically ill insurance coverage, later on in 2017 becoming the Occupational nurse where she assists the controlling doctor with sick leave control of the working population insured under SZV, as well as starts the re-integration process and follows up until the sick employee is (hopefully) re-integrated. Besides all that, Sabrina is in charge of the preventive controls at the workplace where she advises when it comes to occupational health.
This sure all sounds like a busy life. Nevertheless, in additional to all this, Sabrina found the time to found and still chair EduCare Foundation, which focuses on early childhood care and education. EduCare runs a ‘playschool’ in Defiance for children from 6 weeks old until they go to school (4 years). Obviously, Sabrina is not present at the school all the time, but she ensures to keep highly involved and she is always there for a little while before and after work. Under Sabrina’s leadership – and of course, the teachers contribute to this highly! –, EduCare playschool is one of very high standards. It is spacious, clean, well-equipped and provides excellent care and education to the little ones. Sabrina is always looking at ways to improve and encourages her staff to do the same. She ensures the staff is well-educated and maintain their certifications and education by providing for training, courses, etc.
EduCare also provides post-natal care to newborns and new mothers by a registered nurse. The post-natal nurse helps new parents in the first two weeks with care for the baby, as well as looks after the mother on those first weeks after giving birth. Normally, Sabrina doesn’t do that herself as she’s busy enough as it is, but if necessary, because of absence of the regular nurse, she does step in. This happened with Rotarian Femke, who described Sabrina’s work as a post-natal nurse as follows: “Sabrina was an absolute star who provided us with great care, assistance, guidance, encouragement and self-assurance.”
Sabrina is very involved in the community and finds it of great importance that the community is educated and supported when it comes to healthcare and childcare. She’s a great example to her staff and others around her and it is the Rotary Club of Sint Maarten-Mid Isle is honored to present her with the vocational award for 2019. Sabrina has truly shown ‘Service Above Self’.
The Rotary Club of St. Maarten-Mid Isle meets Tuesdays at 7pm at Pineapple Pete in Simpson Bay. For more information please contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
