PHILIPSBURG:— Minister of Tourism & Economic Affairs Stuart Johnson is encouraging persons to participate in the 6thAnnual Beach Clean-Up by the organizers of the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta.
The beach clean-up is scheduled for Saturday, January 26 from 9.00am to 12.00pm at Simpson Bay Corner Beach (aka Kim Sha).
“The beach clean-up is very important. We should have pride in our beaches and treat them with care. A beach is a living resource that changes with every wave that comes ashore.
“Locals and visitors enjoy our beaches on a daily basis and tourists pay thousands of dollars every year to visit the island and enjoy the sun, sea and sand.
“It is a duty as a citizen to protect our local resources – beaches – by keeping them clean. This Saturday is an opportunity for those interested to come out to the beach clean-up that is being organized by the Regatta Foundation and continue to keep our beaches clean for everybody to enjoy,” Minister of Tourism & Economic Affairs Stuart Johnson said on Thursday.
According to a statement by the Regatta Foundation, “Together with local youth, the Regatta Foundation will start the morning with cleaning Kim Sha Beach which has been allocated as a temporary activity area for cruise ship tourists. The morning will be closed off with sports activities.
“The Beach Clean-Up will be a fun morning, starting with a 30-minute competition where teams need to collect the most garbage as possible.
“After the clean-up, a quiz will be held by the St. Maarten Nature Foundation about the effects of pollution on marine life and the environment. The morning will be closed off with all sorts of sports activities organized by LAB Sports Academy.”
This year’s Beach Clean-Up will be provided by LAB Sports Academy, the St. Maarten Nature Foundation, Trisport, Funtopia, the Scubashop, Intertoys, Ocean Explorers, Random Wind and Fiji Water.
