MP Egbert Jurendy Doran calls Prime Minister Romeo-Marlin to Parliament.

PHILIPSBURG:— Member of Parliament Egbert Jurendy Doran requested an urgent public meeting of Parliament, inviting the Prime Minister Leona Romeo-Marlin to update the Members of Parliament concerning the recent developments at the Postal Service St. Maarten.
Of particular interest to the Member of Parliament, is the uncertain employment circumstance in which the workers find themselves, and precisely what risks the company’s downsizing process poses for these workers.
“I have been monitoring the situation for some months now, and the developments transpiring at the Post office are very disappointing to say the very least”, said MP Doran in a statement on Wednesday evening.

In The Daily Herald of September 18, 2018, the President of the St. Maarten Communications Union (SMCU) Ludson Evers, stated that PSS has been having financial challenges for some time now and the entire process is expected to be finalized by October 1”.

Prime Minister Leona Romeo-Marlin told reporters at the Council of Minister’s press briefing in September 2018, that once the process of downsizing PSS was completed, authorities will work with the workers in order to find possible alternative work. This was also published in the Daily Herald on September 20, 2018.

In the meantime, Member of Parliament Doran took note that in Monday’s edition of The Daily Herald, Prime Minister Romeo-Marlin rightfully stated in regards to the serious situation at the Princess Juliana International Airport, that “Without the bridge loan assistance, the airport would not be able to pay salaries at the end of this month, jobs would be lost and employees could no longer take care of families,”.

MP Doran detailed, “I fully agree with this sentiment expressed by the Prime Minister, as the situation at our Airport is extremely serious, and due to the fact that this situation is of no fault of the workers, it is the duty of those in charge to see to it that they are taken care of in the proper manner.

In the meantime, the Member of Parliament is calling on the Prime Minister, to show the same consideration when it comes to the workers of the post office as this is also a Government owned company.
It is the duty of Government to look out for these workers, especially after all the extraordinary circumstances that our people have been facing for the last year and a half after the storms, whereby these workers, among many other on Sint Maarten, are under enormous pressure while trying to provide for their families.

MP Doran said it is very sad and troubling to see that the Prime Minister guaranteed the postal workers jobs on several occasions within the Civil Service, and still to date has not fulfilled this guarantee, thus leaving the workers in a very insecure position.

This request was sent to the Chairlady of Parliament on January 16, 2019, and Member of Parliament Doran is looking towards the Chairlady of Parliament to convene this urgent meeting as soon as possible.
