PHILIPSBURG:---Music Brings people together”, a project organized by the National Institute of Arts and funded by the Nationaal Rampenfonds (Dutch Disaster Fund) hosted two auditions for youth with a great interest in music. The first audition, January 19, was hosted for young people who have musical experience and knowledge in musical theory, whereas the second audition, January 26, was hosted for youth who have an interest in learning music and a yearn for learning to play an instrument(s). There was an estimated total of one hundred students that came to audition; “all with resounding enthusiasm” said, Director Arlene Halley.
The main objective is to form a Youth Orchestra (YO), where the students would be given an opportunity to display their talent and love for music around the island.
After the auditions, the students will be placed into different groups according to their musical experience and the type of musical instrument they can play or are willing to learn to play.
72 scholarship students will benefit from free music classes. This will begin in February, with the chosen 72 scholarships available. The students will be taught throughout the year by well-trained musical experts headed by Mr. Neville James as Orchestra Director.
The project, however, would like to host another audition on February 16th from 9 am – 11 am at the John Larmonie Center, Longwall road, for anyone who might have missed the previous auditions. For more information call 543-0600.
