PHILIPSBURG:--- The Police Department would like to report that the opening of the New Year has been quite busy for the police department when it comes to rendering police assistance for minor disputes. There have been a number of traffic accidents, four of which were with injuries which were not life-threatening and were handled by the Police Traffic Department. The other traffic accidents (fender benders) were handled by CARS. The presence of the police was definitely visible on the Board Walk and in those areas where large crowds gathered to open the New Year as the regular patrolling of all neighborhoods continued. Several businesses such as nightclubs who did not have the necessary permits to stay open after the regular closing hours were asked to close. The police at one point around 04.00 a.m. requested cooperation from the 24/7 gasoline stations not to sell alcoholic beverages until 06.00 a.m. due to the numerous calls regarding the misbehavior of intoxicated persons on the road at the time.
