PHILIPSBURG:— The rent for the current Parliament Building was reduced to $79,000.00 since October 2017 when the contract was renewed for a period of two years with the option to renew come October 2019.
The building which was leased out in October 2010 for a period of 7 years when St. Maarten obtained its country status was rented for $96,000.00 per month since the owner had to redesign and furnish the building to accommodate members of parliament who only moved in with their laptops.
On Friday the ad-hoc committee met to discuss the New Parliament Building Government intends to construct. During this meeting Members of Parliament chose to misinform the public by saying that the rent remains at $96,000.00 instead of making known the current amount being paid to the owner of the building.
