PHILIPSBURG:— The focus this Lionistic year for the St. Maarten Lions Club is on our youth, so the club was extremely excited to learn that our request for funding was approved by Scotia Bank for two projects that would benefit the youth on St. Maarten.
In December the St. Maarten Lions Club was one of several local organizations to officially receive the funds, and for that, we would like to thank Scotia Bank. The funds will be used specifically for projects directly related to youth affairs and or rebuilding our island.
Of the funds received a portion was assigned to the youth wing of the Lions Club namely the St. Maarten Leo Club to fund their projects and a major portion of the funds was donated to the St. Maarten Academy to assist with rebuilding and repairing the school.
The school was significantly damaged by Hurricane Irma in September of 2017, so in collaboration with the St. Maarten Academy Parents Teachers Foundation, the decision was taken to use the funds donated to repair 6 classrooms. Although St. Maarten Academy is not the only school that needed repairs, this school was selected because it is the only high school that is still not open since Irma and the only one with double shift and the sharing classes at the St. Maarten Academy PSV in the afternoon during Monday to Friday
The check for US$ 18,841.29 to purchase the materials needed was presented to the St. Maarten Academy Facilities Manager Antonia Winfield by St. Maarten Lions Club President Lion Carmen Lake and Sub-District 60B District Governor Lion Leslie Ephraim PMJF. St. Maarten Lions Club 1st Vice President Lion Oralie Boirard and St. Maarten Academy School Board Parents Teachers Foundation Representative Elroy Hughes were also present at the check presentation.
