St. Martin’s Home seniors inspire Tzu Chi volunteers.

PHILIPSBURG:—While St. Maarten Tzu Chi Foundation volunteers are honored to treat St. Martin’s Home clients to tender loving care the last Sunday of each month, it is the elderly residents of the home whose gentle nature, wisdom and gratefulness for the care they receive, that is inspiring volunteers.

Several new volunteers were touched by the seniors during the foundation’s most recent visit to the home on Sunday, October 27, while other volunteers continue to be inspired.

New volunteer Eldica Richardson on her first visit to the home, said she had been inspired by the interaction between Tzu Chi and the seniors.

During the monthly visits, volunteers give what the foundation calls its “royal treatment” to seniors. This treatment includes gentle manicures, soothing massages, exercising with the seniors, engaging them in friendly conversations and sometimes helping to feed them. Visiting the home and providing this treatment is a long-time tradition of the St. Maarten Tzu Chi Foundation that has been ongoing for more than a decade.

Richardson said she had visited the Home on many occasions in the past, but visiting with the team from Tzu Chi, opened her eyes to the joy and the motivation from the elderly residents at the home. She plans to continue participating in the visits.

Another new volunteer Antonette Clark said she was happy to have had the opportunity to visit the home with the Tzu Chi family of volunteers. Clark has been residing in St. Maarten for many years and visiting the home to volunteer for the elderly is one way that she can do good for the community of St. Maarten.

Tzu Chi Commissioner Sandra Cheung said the foundation has continued its tradition of visiting the home to treat the elderly every month as a reminder that we need to be good to our parents and the elderly. She said the parents of some persons are no longer around or have passed away and visiting the seniors, is one way to repay our parents by appreciating them for the hard work they had done in their younger years to pave a brighter road for our generation and those after us. “Our very existence comes from our parents. Without them, we wouldn’t be here. We must respect and appreciate them as they are the foundation of being a good person,” she noted.

It is Tzu Chi’s aim to inspire more persons to be good to their parents. Tzu Chi welcomes anyone who wants to join them on the monthly visits to the St. Martin’s Home.

Volunteers, who visit the home to promote filial piety, welcome anyone who would like to join them on their monthly visits the last Sunday of every month from 12:00pm to 1:30pm.
