PHILIPSBURG:—- The Department of Communication and the University of St. Martin will have 4th lecture “The Law Matters to You” lecture at the University of St. Martin on June 6, 2017.
The topic of the lecture will be on Criminal Law, and the keynote speaker will be attorney Zylena Bary LL.M., who specializes in civil and criminal law.
The general public is encouraged to come out to the lecture and hear what Ms. Bary has to present about Criminal Law, who in 2000, graduated Cum Laude from Barry University in Miami, Florida, with a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and a minor in Political Science.
Ms. Bary said that the prosecutor office is an extension of the government since they represent that side in most cases, and she represents the side of the accused. Both sides have to do their jobs to the fullest extent, which causes friction at times. Nevertheless, all sides have to stick to the law in carrying out their duties.
After her graduation, Ms. Bary furthered her studies in The Netherlands, where she graduated in 2004 from the University of Amsterdam with a ‘meester’/Master’s degree in Dutch law.
In 2005, Ms. Bary was sworn in as an attorney on Sint Maarten and has had her own practice for last 12 years.
“The Law Matters To You” lecture series is an initiative and joint collaboration of the Department of Communication and the University of St. Martin; it is a project aimed at informing and providing educational lectures to the general public in all matters pertaining to the law.
Previous lectures were on the Court and Legal System, Civil Law, and Electoral Laws. These lectures can be viewed as DCOMM Special Programs on SXM Cable TV and can be seen at any time on the Government of Sint Maarten YouTube Channel.
