PHILIPSBURG–The Court of First Instance sentenced a 34-year-old man Thursday for secretly taping surveillance-camera images of his adult stepdaughter in the bedroom and bathroom and for storing these images on a hard-disc drive. For this crime, Clynt Gregory W. was sentenced to 150 hours of community service, 75 of which were suspended, on two years’ probation, with Parole Board supervision.
W. clearly had difficulties speaking about his wrongdoings. “It was embarrassing and shameful,” he told the Judge confessing to the fact that he had used a video-surveillance camera to secretly make lewd images of his stepdaughter while she was in the shower and in her bed. He saved the images on a computer and used them for his pleasure, he admitted reluctantly.
He was caught after the pictures were found by somebody else. He informed the Court that he no longer lives under one roof with his stepdaughter but said that he is still in a relationship with her mother.
Asked whether he would need help, the defendant said, “Yes, definitely,” in indicating that he would be willing to undergo psychological treatment.
The Prosecutor commended W. for telling the truth about “this difficult problem.” He found the case proven based on the complaint and the statements in the case file.
“The defendant is punishable as he had violated the victim’s trust in her house, her bedroom and her bed,” the Prosecutor said in finding it proven that the suspect had made video recordings of a lewd nature of a young woman he felt attracted to between 2015 and December 31, 2017.
The Prosecutor did not recommend a prison sentence but said that the hard drive on which the pictures were found had to be destroyed.
Attorney-at-law Geert Hatzmann spoke of an “embarrassing” case. “My client is ashamed, but he took responsibility. Being here today is his biggest punishment. I don’t see any purpose in him doing community service,” the lawyer said in pleading for a fully-suspended sentence.
The Judge found the case proven and sentenced the defendant according to the Prosecutor’s demand and ordered the destruction of the hard-disk drive.
