Students to head to US for tertiary studies on Aug. 11 | THE DAILY HERALD

POND ISLAND–Six St. Maarten students will travel to Florida, specifically to Tallahassee, Miami, Orlando and Fort Lauderdale, on August 11 to further their studies at a tertiary level, Education Minister Wycliffe Smith announced on Wednesday.

Students awarded study financing to pursue their studies in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean number 53. This represents a higher number than those who received financing to head to the Netherlands. That number is 36.

The students heading to Florida will depart home independently. Their departure was dependent on, among others, securing a student visa, start date of their college or university and obtaining their Caribbean Examination CXC diploma.

The Study Financing Division processes the requests via the regular study financing programme, the Study in the Region (SIDR) Programme and the NIPA Study Allowance. Applications were received from December 2018 to January 2019.

Through SIDR, 27 applications were received of which 21 were approved. From those, 15 were requests for study on St. Maarten. Only one was denied. Three were requested for study in the United States; two were approved and one denied. Other approved applicants will head to Anguilla, Aruba, Canada, Curaçao and Jamaica.

For the regular study financing, 183 applications were received of which 109 were granted and 70 denied. Four remain pending a decision. Some 18 applicants requested aid to study in St. Maarten. Of that number, a dozen was approved, four denied and two remain pending.

Another 67 students requested financing to study in the Netherlands – 36 were approved and 31 denied.

For the United States, 58 applications were received – 36 were approved, 20 denied and two remain pending.

Other applications were received and approved for Anguilla, Aruba, Bonaire, Canada, Curaçao, Dominican Republic, Panama, and the United Kingdom.
