GREAT BAY--The St. Maarten Library is celebrating the retirement of Shirley Richardson after 45 years of dedicated service to the institution, literacy and generations of families across the country.
Richardson retires just two months shy of her 46th anniversary with the library, closing a career that stretched across nearly five decades and saw her become a familiar presence to children, parents and longtime library users.
Throughout her career at the former Philipsburg Jubilee Library, now the St. Maarten Library, Richardson played a role in introducing generations of children to books and reading. Her work ranged from guiding toddlers toward their first picture books to helping students develop a lasting interest in reading and learning.
Over the years, she also witnessed the development and evolution of the library while remaining a consistent and welcoming presence within the institution. The library noted that many adults who encountered Richardson as children are now reading to their own children, continuing the cycle of literacy she helped encourage.
The St. Maarten Library Board described Richardson’s 45 years of service as an extraordinary achievement and said her contribution forms an important part of the institution’s history.
“Forty-five years of service is an extraordinary achievement,” the Board stated. “Shirley’s passion represents one of the brightest chapters in our history. Her legacy lives on through the many lives she touched and the countless individuals she welcomed, assisted, and inspired throughout her years of service. We are deeply grateful for her historic contribution to the library and the community of St. Maarten.”
The library said Richardson’s contribution went beyond her day-to-day duties, helping shape the educational experiences of young people and strengthening the institution’s wider mission of promoting literacy and learning.
As she enters retirement, the St. Maarten Library family extended its appreciation and best wishes to Richardson, thanking her for 45 years of service and for the role she played in fostering a love of reading across generations.
The St. Maarten Library continues to provide books, educational resources, cultural programming and activities aimed at encouraging lifelong reading and learning within the community.
