Minister Gumbs recently registered as a member of the St. Maarten Library and selectedThe Two Squabbling Squirrelsas her book for the celebration. Her participation forms part of the wider effort to encourage children and families to make reading a regular and enjoyable part of everyday life.

The Grand Celebration will feature activities for children and families throughout the day, including a Miniature Parade of Books, meet-and-greet sessions, poetry, storytelling, a puppet show, capoeira, face painting and entertainment.

Families and caregivers are encouraged to bring their young readers to Emilio Wilson Park and participate in the celebration. Organizers said the event is intended to highlight the role books can play in developing imagination, curiosity and a lifelong interest in learning.

The Early Learners BookStart Campaign promotes the importance of introducing children to books and reading from an early age. Throughout September, the campaign has connected young children with books and stories through community readers, educators, day-care centers, families and community partners.

The St. Maarten Library said the campaign is also aimed at helping families see reading as something that can be shared and enjoyed together, while creating positive early experiences around books.

Saturday's event will provide the wider community with an opportunity to celebrate those efforts while giving children a day centered on storytelling, creativity and discovery.

The St. Maarten Library looks forward to welcoming families and community members to Emilio Wilson Park on Saturday, September 19, from 10:00am to 3:00pm.
