GREAT BAY--Minister of Public Health, Social Development and Labor Claret Connor is honoring St. Maarten’s senior citizens on World Senior Citizen Day 2026, recognizing their contribution to the development of the country and reaffirming the Ministry’s responsibility to support their wellbeing, dignity and quality of life.

“Our seniors are the people who built this island and raised its children. They are the shoulders on which we stand,” Minister Connor said.

The Minister said generations of senior citizens have helped shape St. Maarten through their sacrifices, experience and commitment to their families and communities. Their stories preserve an important part of the country’s history, while their knowledge and experiences continue to provide guidance to younger generations.

Connor stressed that recognizing seniors must extend beyond ceremonial messages and expressions of appreciation.

“As Minister, I, and every citizen, stand on your shoulders, and I recognize that the responsibility for the wellbeing, dignity, and quality of life as a senior citizen is one that I and this Ministry carry, and I take that responsibility seriously,” Connor said.

He said government and the wider community must continue listening to seniors, understanding the challenges they face and working to ensure they remain connected, independent and active members of society.

The Minister also expressed appreciation to caregivers, families, churches, community groups and organizations that provide assistance and companionship to senior citizens throughout the year.

As part of activities recognizing World Senior Citizen Day, the St. Maarten Senior Citizens Organization, in partnership with the Home Away from Home Foundation, will host a Walk-a-thon on Saturday, August 22, 2026.

The walk will begin at 8:00 a.m. from the Walter Plantz Pier in Philipsburg, bringing members of the community together in celebration of and solidarity with the country’s senior citizens.

The Ministry is encouraging residents to support the initiative and to recognize the value and contributions of seniors not only on World Senior Citizen Day, but throughout the year.

“To all our senior citizens: you paved the way. You continue to matter! You deserve to be seen, heard, respected, and cared for,” Connor said. “Your legacy strengthens our nation, and your presence continues to inspire us.”

Minister Connor wished all senior citizens across St. Maarten a Happy World Senior Citizen Day.
