GREAT BAY--Native Nation SXM (NNCSXM) is continuing its monthly Food Basket Drive, an initiative designed to provide fresh, locally grown produce to community members in need while also creating direct support for St. Maarten’s farmers.
Through the initiative, approximately four food baskets are distributed each month to individuals and families who may require additional assistance. The baskets are filled with locally grown produce supplied through the St. Maarten Farmers Cooperative (SMFC), ensuring that the program benefits both recipients and the farmers producing food locally.
Over the past five months, approximately 20 baskets have been distributed, with two additional baskets already provided during August.
Native Nation SXM said the initiative reflects its belief that community assistance and support for local agriculture can work hand in hand. By purchasing and distributing locally grown produce, the organization is helping residents gain access to healthy food while directing support back into the agricultural sector.
The initiative also seeks to highlight the work being done by local farmers, many of whom continue producing despite challenges that can significantly affect their farms and harvests.
Among the issues identified are invasive animals, including monkeys and iguanas, as well as water shortages during extended periods of dry weather. These conditions can reduce crop yields and make agricultural production increasingly difficult. Despite those challenges, farmers continue working with available resources to bring locally grown produce to the St. Maarten market.
Native Nation SXM believes greater attention must therefore be given to strengthening the agricultural sector, not only as an economic activity but as part of the country’s wider approach to food security.
The organization said global uncertainty surrounding food supply chains continues to demonstrate why greater local food production should remain a national priority.
For an island that depends heavily on imported food, developing a stronger agricultural sector can help improve resilience while creating opportunities for local farmers and increasing access to fresh produce.
Native Nation SXM said discussions about agriculture should therefore extend beyond individual industries and include the broader need for a sustainable agricultural program that supports food production, farmers and long-term food security.
While emerging agricultural sectors, including cannabis, may create future economic opportunities, the organization said equal attention must be given to strengthening the production of food crops and establishing the systems farmers need to operate sustainably.
Local agriculture, the organization said, should be viewed not only in terms of what is grown, but also in terms of reducing vulnerability, supporting livelihoods, creating economic opportunities and strengthening St. Maarten’s ability to provide more of its own food.
Native Nation SXM said the Food Basket Drive forms part of its broader commitment to remaining connected to the community and providing assistance where possible.
The organization hopes the initiative will also encourage greater appreciation for the farmers who continue working the land and contributing to the local food supply despite the obstacles they face.
