Last Saturday, the Bellevue community garden hosted a creative festival organized by the associations SXM Hope, Apren, and Touch to Heart for young people. More than 50 children and their parents were present throughout the day, from the Easter egg hunt to the various cooking and arts and crafts workshops.
Among the new features of this year’s event, several workshops particularly appealed to children: kite making, preparing Johnny Cakes and tamarind sweets, and an introduction to circus arts. “Kite making was an important part of our childhood,” explains Rebekah Maccow, president of the SXM Hope association and director of the RM Art School. For her, the event was not just an opportunity to entertain children, but also to “promote our traditions and showcase small local businesses.” Throughout the day, eight businesses and associations from Saint-Martin led creative workshops, assisted by members of the organizing associations.
Between bites of Johnny Cakes, the children learned how to make bags from simple t-shirts thanks to Janine Mingau, a cultural icon of Saint Martin known even in the United States for her traditional costumes. They also learned the basics of Caribbean percussion before trying their hand at juggling. All the children left with small gifts from the organizers. The winner of the Easter egg hunt went home with over 120 chocolate eggs—enough to last until Christmas! _DR
