South Reward Community receives a wealth of info from Collective | SOUALIGA NEWSDAY

SINT MAARTEN (SOUTH REWARD) – Community engagement is alive and well in South Reward. Recently, the St. Maarten Community Collective South Reward hosted a community meeting to encourage community participation.

The meeting, which was held at Milton Peters College, was well attended by a cross section of the community. Starting at 7pm, the meeting was opened by Treasurer Everonique Levenstone who welcomed attendees and encouraged active participation and feedback.

Following Levenstone, the meeting was turned over to Collective’s Secretary Aishira Cicilia. Cicilia’s extensive presentation provided an overview of activities executed since the Collective’s formation in 2015. Additionally, Cicilia provided updates of ongoing and upcoming activities including collaborative projects with St. Maarten Development Fund (SMDF).

Also making a presentation at the meeting was Ombudsman Gwendolien Mossel. The Ombudsman’s presentation focused on her Community outreach program which entails documenting the stories of persons who were severely impacted by the hurricanes in 2017. In addition, the Ombudsman encouraged residents to be aware of their rights and the process to report complaints against public bodies.

The meeting is the first of three being held in April. Keeping up the momentum, the Collective will be holding a community orientation meeting for persons interested in becoming a member on Monday April 8th at 6:30pm. Following the orientation meeting, the Collective will organize elections for new leadership amongst the members of the collective on Wednesday April 10that 6:30pm.

In speaking about the elections, Cicilia described the importance of open leadership and allowing all residents to contribute to their community. “For any organization to grow, it must be open to new leadership,” said Cicilia. “This organization always encourages residents to be active members and we hope that the residents of South Reward will come out to our next meetings,” she continued.
